Saw has been proven to be one of the most extraordinarily terrifying movies of this time. I’m not saying this for the sake of an opening statement but because I was in the edge of my seat in all three trilogies and believe me I’m not easy to scare. The story line is so good that in less than 5 years audience have been clamoring for more of Jigsaw’s scary mental and physical tactics. I have watched the first three parts but I am a bit hesitant to watch the latest because I’m scared of tarnishing my view of the film so instead, I tried to look up some reviews of the film and this is what I found in mediagirl.org

One of the most prominent themes of this movie was the use of female sexual powerlessness as a means to strike fear in the audience. There are two lengthy scenes where sexual powerlessness occurs. I will discuss one. The protagonist Riggs (Lyriq Bent) is faced with a moral dilemma. He either saves his fellow detectives or saves a prostitute. Jigsaw convinces the prostitute that if she kills Riggs then she will not have to go to jail for her crimes. When Riggs first sees her, her head is covered with a pig’s head. Her entire body is in bondage. A 15 second screen shot from her high heels all the way up to the pig’s head shows her breasts and thighs. Even in a horror movie, a woman in bondage and being tortured must look sexy. No where in the film are the men required to be physically and sexually objectified.

In Saw IV, both women and men are in bondage. Both women and men suffer from a huge power differential between themselves and the torturer. The difference between the males and female is not the magnitude of the torture, but rather, how the tortured respond to pain and powerlessness. All of the men in the film attempt to fight their way out of being tortured. The female character begs for help. The way that men react to powerlessness and the way women respond is entirely different. The writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan characterize men in the film to fight for their rights even though they are “in the wrong” until the bitter end. There is an endearing quality to a person who fights for their lives until the very end … even if they are the antagonists. The prostitute was not written to have a fighter’s spirit. She was characterized as being self-defeating and desperate.

The two other female characters were protagonists of the film. Jill (Betsy Russell) was the wife of Jigsaw. From the very beginning, she was portrayed as a lier and as much of a crook as her husband. Quite the contrary, Jill did not believe that “the end justifys the means” as Jigsaw did. The cops discredited her testimony every step of the way. It was as if a wife cannot think differently than her husband. Jill maintained her autonomy throughout the film. The price for her autonomy was harassment by the police detectives.

The other female character was Agent Perez (Athena Karkanis). Like in Transformers, another highly trained professional was discredited by the patriarchy. Agent Perez took the moral high ground, but her superior, which just happened to be male, ignored her advice and morality. Agent Perez literally died of curiosity in the movie.

How could this film be feminist friendly and still maintain it’s pop appeal?

1. Characterize females in horror movies to fight out of torture as opposed to having a desperate and self-defeating attitude.

2. Exemplify female autonomy (independence) from male co-actors in a normalized manner instead of it being portrayed as atypical and out of the norm.

3. Rape and other forms of sexual assault where female are consistently the victim create a stereotype that females are the only victims of sexual assault. In horror films, why is it that only women are the targets of rape? Why not males? Either way it is just as brutal and adds some variety to the torturous encounters.

4. Stop making female physical and sexual objectification the norm.

Having read the review and being interested in BDSM and Bondage, theres no doubt I’m bound to watch it once I get the chance.

The carcass of a buried body raised a question on the legal boundaries of doing BDSM. A lot of Sadomasochists and people into BDSM practice have been following this case ever since its inception some time ago. According to reports a man was found buried after a BDSM session in his masters’ “playroom” in Boston. They are reported to have met in an S&M site and decided to get together for a bondage session. The victim was placed in a cabinet tightly wrapped with plastic and covered with duct tape, his only means of oxygen is a straw which is supposed to have been placed in his mouth. Not until later, a third party came in and discovered the discolored cadaver, they said that the straw must have fallen off his mouth which led to his death. Because of panic I guess, they drove down, buried the body and threw away the clothes and identification.

Soon, the perpetrator committed suicide by shooting his head and left a five- page note. He confessed to what happened and said that he was “responsible for a horrible tragedy,” adding: “Had I dealt with the first crisis responsibly, he would likely have returned home safely.” Now its up to the law on how they are going to weigh this down since a court battle is in session between the family of the two deceased.

The defense lawyer says “What occurred was an act or actions between two consenting adults, both of whom knew what they were doing, and it had a tragic end,’

While the other party says that “Just because you are agreeing that you will allow someone to tie you up temporarily as part of role-playing doesn’t mean that you are consenting to be killed or to be left alone or to be abused,”

I couldn’t agree more.

“Please do not touch, lick, stroke or mount the exhibits” a very quizzical warning for a museum. That is the type of cautionary signs you will find in the famous “Museum of Sex” or “MoSex” on 5th Avenue.

“Museum of Sex” that features fetish paraphernalia and other erotic sex stuff was “denied non-profit” by the State of New York so they solely rely on solicitations, donors and a whopping entrance fee of $14.50 exclusive of tax, mind you! But what sets “MoSex” from other erotica and fetish museums all over the world? Its curators says that “other institutions explicitly seek to spur sexual sensations – they are entertainments,” “Museum of Sex” on the other hand has a different kind of approach; they are more of “curatorial” rather than just amusing.

Since the Museum features extraordinary sex related paraphernalia, one question is raised, is it a “kink” or a “fetish” to go to a place like this? And this is the exhibition’s answer to this question:

“Kink: Geography of the Erotic Imagination,” which takes up the first floor of the museum, they are very different things. A kink “is the use of props, costumes and role play to enhance partner intimacy.” But a fetish “is when the props, costumes or role play replace the partner and the intimacy.” So fetish at some degree is much deeper and more demanding than kink.

So you ask yourself, is splurging $14.50 for a museum that features erotica considered normal? Well we can say that theres always a line that separates curiosity and kink/fetish apart. It is 100% normal to be curious about what you may find inside the museum, majority would. I’m not saying its “not” normal to want to go back there after one visit but maybe this time, you ought to check if suddenly you have this urge of getting tied, spanked and explore sex in a deeper and a more whimsical manner.

BDSM has been hitting American debates lately, people question the morality of BDSM practice and the reason behind going through it. So a few months ago, David Shankbone -a writer from Wikinews decided to explore what is going on behind or rather under the dungeons of New York City.

BDSM Dungeons are very much legal in New York City, there is actually a client base who are “dying” to get humiliated, spanked, dressed in infant clothes and other varieties of fetishes that some might not heard of. He trailed one of the popular dungeons through BDSM participants in the city and he discovered “HC & Co.” This sadomasochistic dungeon is owned by partners who never really participate in BDSM, in fact, they were at first absentee partners and claims that they are in it “only for the money” but sooner than they expected, they were already working their asses to provide hard spanking fetish services to their clients. They chose to be anonymous in the interview because most people close to them, particularly their kids knows what kind of business they are venturing in. A degree in psychology and good business skills helped this couple provide great BDSM service.

Bill, the owner views the business and BDSM itself in this perspective “if you had a kink, and you had a wife and you had two kids, and every time you had sex with your wife it just didn’t hit the nail on the head. What would you do about it? How would you handle it? You might go through life feeling unfulfilled. Or you might say, ‘No, my kink is I really need to dress in women’s clothing.’ We’re that outlet. We’re not the evil devil out here, plucking people off the street, keeping them chained up for days on end.”

No matter how much BDSM groups circulate their advocacy of “safe spanking” there are times when things just don’t go as planned.

A woman met a BDSM enthusiast dubbed as “S&M Svengali” in the Internet last 1998; unfortunately, the woman got more than she can handle. She was forced into labor by her “master;” was photographed for his BDSM site, degraded her by shaving her head, branded a letter “G” on her buttocks and carved the word “Slave” on her stomach. He was found guilty for charges of sex trafficking and forced labor. He argued that he and the victim had a contract for this kind of relationship, but prosecutors contended that he crossed the boundaries even of the BDSM community.

Another story is that of Steve Guttenberg who confessed to New York Daily that he participated on a kinky BDSM exercise with an older lady decades ago; the thing is, they never even got “there” that night.

steveg5al.jpg
Back when he was 19, Guttenberg met the lady while hanging out on a club on Sunset Strip. He was invited to her home and to his surprise, she was actually into BDSM and had a bondage fetish. She showed him her closet filled with BDSM outfits and bondage paraphernalia. The next thing he knew, she was requesting to be tied on her four-post bed. Once he knew she was secured, he ran to the pharmacy to get some “protection” flowers, candy and little sandwiches. Too bad for the lady, when he returned to the apartment complex, he couldn’t remember which tower, floor nor apartment number she lived. So instead of looking for her place, he went home and left her tied up.

“In my mind, she’s now this skeleton in an apartment somewhere in Marina Del Rey. Like Nicole Richie.”

BDSM groups launches “the words biggest leather event” which aims to fill San Francisco’s Folsom Street with people of all ages come out in their kinkiest leather, rubber and fetish suits. For their ad, they made their own twisted version of Leonardo Da Vinci’s “Last Supper” which is portrayed by leather-clad gay men and women who are believed to be BDSM participants.

The despondency of these social minority groups on the jaundiced eye of the majority is quite obvious. It is known that the gay and BDSM community are offended by how they are given prejudices by a lot of religious groups. We really can’t say the intentions of the BDSM group for producing this version of the popular art piece. Whether people view it as blasphemous or facetious, they only have one goal in mind is to make known to everyone that they are proud of their lifestyle. One thing is certain- Folsom Street will be covered with leather- lots and lots of it!

On the other hand, a lot of people are disgruntled by this move of the BDSM community,

“Gay’ activists disingenuously call Christians ‘haters’ and ‘homophobes’ for honoring the Bible, but then lash out in this hateful manner toward the very people they accuse,” said the policy director for cultural issues of the group CWA (Concerned Women of America)

San Francisco local government sanctioned this event and allowed some of the blocks to be shut down. CWA find this “shocking and offensive” because they are very much disgusted by the fact that tax payers will foot the bill for all the government services that will be needed for the event.

CWA calls the attention of California government officials like House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger to “publicly condemn this unprovoked attack against Christ and His followers.

Here is one hot video for Bondage Lovers!

It was interesting that a lot of people who saw the video in youtube actually enjoyed it. They even asked for more BDSM videos to be posted. They willingly defended BDSM as something done out of This manner of bondage is still parallel to the main idea of BDSM -getting to a certain sexual goal in a manner which is very uncommon compared to the usual sexual acts, it is still a means to a certain goal. BDSM acts are more commonly known to people as an act done by a couple.

Though some might think that BDSM done by two people may be dangerous, doing it alone is just as interpid. There are cases like lost handcuff keys and suffocation but of course, BDSM participants  who loves getting into these kinds of activities argue that they give extra cae whenever they bound themselves.

There was also a submissive who admitted that she once had a partner who left her blindfolded and boud for hours until the worst thing happened, the house caught fire and she almost didn’t make it out of the burning house alive. Luckily, she was saved at the right moment suffering only minor burns. Yes, this is true, well as far as the internet is concerned.

BDSM is a different way of pleasuring ones self. Its also something that spices up relationships and gives birth to different kinds of sexual adventures that adds flavor and variety to the usual things that we do. But, BDSM groups makes it a point that safety must always be kept in mind. After all, there won’t be any thrill left if you die trying to achieve something more trivial than maintaining ones life…

I saw a video in youtube that will make every feminist’s or probably any “unsubmissive” woman’s blood boil.

Infuriating huh.. Judging from all the articles I’ve read, hard core BDSM participants will strongly disagree to this definition of masochism. For the longest time, BDSM- ers have contradicted this “prejududiced” view. They are wondering why people treat these acts as a psychological disorder when it is not. In my previews entries, I have discussed what goes in the mind of people who are into BDSM acts and they said that it is a means to a goal. Whatever goes with the act is consentual and never leads to a degrading act. A lot of feminists are pro to these activities because it shows women empowerment, but it does not necessrily mean that BDSM reduces men into weaker beings.

Its funny how people use youtube to rant out the frustrations of their personal lives. Some of them start out trying to sound all reasonable, intellectual and end up looking like a moron whose only intention is to get the attention of a woman dumb enough to be convinced by their theatrics. Like this fuzzy guy right here:

Yep, blame the BDSM community for not teaching you good social skills… Mister Ego here wants a woman who is far more intellectual than he is. You know the word “contradiction?” No? Look it up in the dictionary. Its after the letter “B” for bigot and before “D” for.. dddetard?

Oh, and speaking of detard, this poor guy right here has a complain to the BDSM community as well, BDSM community maybe you should listen to this guy’s argument. Let me quote “You become an outcast to a group that is already an outcast!” I wonder if this guy took a long look at the mirror.

As for my mirror question.. you’ve seen the answer, right?
